Want your Capital One statement in Excel? PaperRows converts a US Capital One 360 Checking statement PDF to CSV for Excel or QuickBooks Online. Checking accounts only for now: savings, credit card and loan statements are not read yet. You get a CSV, not an Excel (.xlsx) or QBO file; the CSV opens in Excel or any other spreadsheet.
Tested on made-up statements only. So far PaperRows has read Capital One 360 Checking statements that we built ourselves in the layout described below. It has not yet read a real one. Until it does, compare the rows in your file with your PDF before you rely on them.
PaperRows reads personal 360 Checking statements in the layout described below. This page covers how to download the right PDF from capitalone.com, how that layout turns into rows, and what to do when a file is refused or a check fails.
Try it on your statement: drop the PDF into the converter on the home page. The preview is free, and the file never leaves your browser.
PaperRows is independent and is not connected with Capital One. Capital One changes its menus now and then, so if a label below does not match your screen, look for the closest one.
1. Get the right PDF
You want the monthly statement (Capital One calls it an eStatement), not a printout or export of your recent transactions.
- Sign in at capitalone.com on a computer. The app can show statements too, but saving the original PDF is easier on a computer.
- Open your 360 Checking account.
- Look for Statements. Depending on the screen it sits on the account page itself or in a menu for that account.
- Pick the month you want and open the statement. It opens as a PDF.
- Use the download or save icon in the PDF viewer to keep the original file. Do not use your browser's Print button to make a new PDF.
Rough check for a text PDF: try selecting a word in the file. If text highlights word by word, that is a good sign. If the whole page highlights as one block, it is an image and PaperRows cannot read it. Selectable text does not prove we can read the layout.
Paid already? Keep using the exact file you paid for. The $5 unlock is tied to that file, and a copy you download again later may not count as the same file.
2. Which Capital One statements we read
| Statement | Supported |
|---|---|
| 360 Checking (personal) | Yes, in the layout below. Made-up statements only so far. |
| Business checking | Not yet |
| 360 Performance Savings and other savings | Not yet |
| Capital One credit cards | Not yet |
| Statements that combine checking and savings in one PDF | Only the 360 Checking part is read, and only when checking prints its own Opening Balance and Closing Balance. Savings rows are left out, and the result says the savings section was skipped. If the first page lists two accounts and then prints balances without saying which account they belong to, the file is refused. Tested on made-up statements only so far. |
The layout PaperRows reads today
PaperRows reads the 360 Checking layout that has:
- a 360 Checking Summary with the account balance, usually on the first page,
- one activity table with the columns Activity, Date, Amount and Balance (the description comes first) or Date, Description, Amount and Balance (the date comes first), where each row has a signed amount and a running balance, and
- an Opening Balance and a Closing Balance: either as rows at the top and bottom of the table, each with its date, or in a summary above the table together with the statement period.
Some statements print money in and money out in two separate columns, Debit and Credit, after Date and Description, instead of one signed amount. PaperRows reads those too and writes money out as a negative amount. A table with columns we do not know is refused before you are asked to pay. The result then says "This Capital One statement layout is new to us". If you see that on your monthly 360 Checking statement, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. It helps us decide what to build next. Please do not send the statement.
How that layout turns into rows
- One row per transaction, in statement order, with a single signed amount: money in is positive, money out is negative.
- The statement period runs from the Opening Balance date to the Closing Balance date. When those balances carry no date, it is the statement period printed above the table.
- Dates usually have a year. Capital One prints full dates like
12/16/2026, so nothing is guessed. If a statement prints only month and day, the year comes from the statement period printed on the statement. If a row's date falls outside the statement period, the check "Dates inside the statement period" fails and the preview shows no rows. - Long descriptions. We join description lines that wrap onto the next line. If their lengths leave the join ambiguous in a case we recognize, the check "Every transaction line read" fails and the preview shows no rows. Some descriptions that run over three or more lines can still be joined without spaces at the breaks, even where spaces belong. Compare wrapped descriptions with your PDF before you pay or use the CSV.
- Running balance. Each printed balance is checked against the row before it. If one does not follow, the check "Running balances follow" fails and the preview shows no rows.
- Opening to closing. The rows have to take the opening balance to the closing balance, and the balance in the summary has to match the closing balance in the table. A line marked pending is never booked as a row; it makes the check "Every transaction line read" fail instead. Capital One does not print separate deposit and withdrawal totals on this layout, so there is no section total to compare.
3. What you get
After you unlock a statement there are two buttons: Download plain CSV and Download QuickBooks CSV. The files are named after the bank and the statement period, for example paperrows-capitalone-2026-12-15-to-2027-01-14.csv and paperrows-capitalone-2026-12-15-to-2027-01-14-quickbooks.csv.
Plain CSV:
page,line,date,description,amount,balance
1,12,2026-12-16,Debit Card Purchase - OFFICE SUPPLIES,-24.75,6358.38
1,13,2026-12-31,Deposit from EMPLOYER PAYROLL,2400.00,8758.38
2,4,2027-01-02,Zelle money sent to LANDLORD,-1500.00,7258.38
QuickBooks Online CSV:
Date,Description,Amount
12/16/2026,Debit Card Purchase - OFFICE SUPPLIES,-24.75
12/31/2026,Deposit from EMPLOYER PAYROLL,2400.00
01/02/2027,Zelle money sent to LANDLORD,-1500.00
(Made-up example rows, not real data.) If a description starts with =, +, - or @, we put an apostrophe in front of it so a spreadsheet does not treat it as a formula.
4. Import into QuickBooks Online
The full steps are on the QuickBooks Online import guide. We have not yet tried that import in QuickBooks ourselves, and the guide says so at the top. For Capital One:
- Already connected Capital One to QuickBooks? If QuickBooks already pulls in this account through a bank feed, uploading the same dates again creates duplicates. Upload only months the feed does not cover, or exclude the duplicates when you review them.
- Why one amount column and not two? QuickBooks Online accepts either. One signed column means a deposit cannot land as a withdrawal because of a mapping slip. Your statement may print Debit and Credit in separate columns; the file still has one Amount column, with money out negative.
- A debit with no minus sign? In a single Amount column we take each number as printed and never flip a sign to make it fit. When your statement prints a running balance on each row, a debit printed as a plain number makes the check "Running balances follow" fail, and there is no file to import. That check only works because the balance is printed. We do not read a statement without a balance on each row yet, so you would not get a file from one.
- Checking and savings on one statement? Only the 360 Checking rows go into the file, whether savings comes before or after checking in the PDF, as long as checking prints its own Opening Balance and Closing Balance. Savings rows are left out, so import it into your checking account in QuickBooks and nowhere else. A savings statement on its own is refused, so there is nothing to import for it. So far this has only been tested on made-up statements, not on a real combined Capital One statement. If yours is combined, compare the rows in the file with the checking part of the PDF before you import.
- Intuit's instructions currently limit one upload to 1,000 transactions. If a statement has more rows than that, split the file in a spreadsheet and keep the header row on both halves.
5. When a Capital One file is refused
A refused file shows no rows and no buy button. Previews are free, so you have not been charged for this one. The heading tells you which case it is:
| What the heading says | What is going on | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| We could not open this PDF | The file is empty, damaged or not really a PDF. | Download the statement again from capitalone.com. |
| This PDF has a password | The file asks for a password before it opens. We never ask for passwords. | Save a copy without the password, or download a fresh one. |
| This PDF has pages without readable text | At least one page is a picture with no text in it. | Download the original statement. Do not scan or print to PDF. |
| We do not read this bank yet | The first line of the first page does not start with Capital One, and we could not find Capital One's legal name or web address at the top of the first page or at the bottom of any page. Transaction rows never count. | Check it is the Capital One statement itself and not a cover page or another bank's file. |
| This does not look like a checking statement | It looks like a savings, credit card or loan statement, with no 360 Checking section in it. A 360 Savings statement on its own lands here. | Nothing to do for now. Tell us if you want it. |
| This Capital One statement layout is new to us | It is a Capital One file, but not the layout above. Often a saved transactions screen, a table with columns we do not know, a statement with no Opening Balance or Closing Balance row, a combined statement whose checking section prints no balances of its own, or one statement with two checking accounts on it. The result may also offer Report a problem. | Download the monthly 360 Checking statement itself. If it is already the monthly statement, it is a layout we have not built yet: use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. |
| We do not recognize this statement layout | The top of the first page or the bottom of a page names Capital One and another bank too, so we cannot tell which layout to read. | Check that you picked the right file. If it is your monthly 360 Checking statement, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. |
6. When a check fails
Sometimes we can read the file, but one of our checks against the statement itself does not pass. The preview then says Some checks did not pass, lists the checks that failed, and shows no rows and nothing to buy. Previews are free, so you have not been charged for this one. What each check means:
| Failed check | What it means |
|---|---|
| Every page read | A page number is missing or out of order. Download the full statement again. If a fresh copy fails too, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the statement month and the name of the check. |
| Every transaction line read | A line looks like a transaction but we could not read it, or a line is marked pending or memo. It also fails when the lengths of wrapped description lines leave the join ambiguous (see "Long descriptions" above). |
| Opening + deposits - withdrawals = closing | The rows do not take the opening balance to the closing balance. |
| Printed balances agree | The summary and the table show different balances. |
| Running balances follow | A printed balance does not follow from the row before it. |
| Dates inside the statement period | A row's date does not fit the period. |
Apart from a missing page, that is on us. We never guess a row to make the numbers work. If the result shows Report a problem, use it; otherwise write to us at hello@asgardagents.com with the statement month and the name of the check that failed. Please do not send the PDF.
Questions? Write to us with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. We never need the statement, so please do not attach it. More answers are on the FAQ.
