Converting a TD Bank US checking statement

TD Bank support is in beta. It is new, so we read it with the same checks as every other bank, and if a row is wrong, the refund rule covers it. If something looks off, use Report a problem if the result shows it; otherwise email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. Please do not send the statement.

Convert a TD Bank checking statement PDF to CSV for Excel or QuickBooks Online. You get a CSV, not an Excel (.xlsx) or QBO file; the CSV opens in Excel or any other spreadsheet.

TD Bank US only. That is TD Bank, N.A., the US bank at tdbank.com. Statements that show signs of TD Canada, such as TD Canada Trust or anything downloaded from EasyWeb, are refused with "We could not confirm this is a TD Bank US statement" and the line "This looks like a TD statement, but ..." followed by the reason. A refused file costs nothing.

Tested on made-up statements only. So far PaperRows has read TD Bank US checking statements that we built ourselves in the layout described below. It has not yet read a real one. Until it does, compare the rows in your file with your PDF before you rely on them.

PaperRows reads personal TD Bank US checking statements in the layout described below. This page covers how to download the right PDF from tdbank.com, how that layout turns into rows, and what to do when a file is refused or a check fails.

Try it on your statement: drop the PDF into the converter on the home page. The preview is free, and the file never leaves your browser.

PaperRows is independent and is not connected with TD Bank or The Toronto-Dominion Bank. TD changes its menus now and then, so if a label below does not match your screen, look for the closest one.

1. Get the right PDF

You want the monthly statement (TD calls it an eStatement), not a printout or export of your recent transactions.

  1. Sign in to TD Bank online banking at tdbank.com on a computer. The app can show statements too, but saving the original PDF is easier on a computer.
  2. Open your checking account.
  3. Look for Statements or eStatements. Depending on the screen it sits on the account page itself or in a menu for documents.
  4. Pick the month you want and open the statement. It opens as a PDF.
  5. Use the download or save icon in the PDF viewer to keep the original file. Do not use your browser's Print button to make a new PDF.

Rough check for a text PDF: try selecting a word in the file. If text highlights word by word, that is a good sign. If the whole page highlights as one block, it is an image and PaperRows cannot read it. Selectable text does not prove we can read the layout.

Paid already? Keep using the exact file you paid for. The $5 unlock is tied to that file, and a copy you download again later may not count as the same file.

2. Which TD statements we read

Statement Supported
TD Bank US personal checking Yes, in the layout below. Made-up statements only so far.
TD Canada Trust chequing, savings or anything else from EasyWeb No. Refused, whatever the account.
TD Bank US savings on its own Not yet
TD Bank US credit cards and loans Not yet
One TD Bank US statement with one checking account plus a separate savings section Only the checking part is read and the savings rows are left out, even when the first page also prints a savings summary, in capitals or not. The result says the savings section was skipped. A savings section printed under the checking account number is refused. Made-up statements only so far.
One TD Bank US statement with two or more checking accounts No. Refused, so rows from different accounts never land in one file.

How we tell TD Bank US from TD Canada

A TD logo, the letters TD on their own, a dollar sign or the file name is never enough. First the statement header or page footers have to show TD Bank wording: TD Bank, N.A., tdbank.com, TD Canada Trust, Toronto-Dominion Bank or EasyWeb. A file that only says TD, like a TD Ameritrade or TD Synnex statement, is not treated as TD Bank at all and gets "We do not read this bank yet".

Once a file shows TD Bank wording, we check that it is TD Bank US. If it is not, it gets "We could not confirm this is a TD Bank US statement". We refuse the file if it has any of these anywhere in it, a savings section included: TD Canada Trust, EasyWeb, the word chequing or CDIC. We also refuse it for a transit or institution number or a Canadian postal code printed outside the transaction rows, such as in the address or a page header. Inside a transaction row the same letters and digits can be a card or reference number, so they do not count there.

We also refuse it unless these are printed outside the transaction rows: TD Bank, N.A. or tdbank.com, and a US state with a ZIP code. To be read as TD Bank US at all, the statement header or page footers need TD Bank, N.A. plus one more marker, such as tdbank.com or a first line that starts with TD. The bank name and the US address have to come from the statement header or from the checking account's own part of the statement, page footers included. Lines that belong only to a savings account on the same statement do not count, and neither does a transaction that happens to say "TD Bank, N.A."

The layout PaperRows reads today

PaperRows reads the TD Bank US checking layout that has:

  • a Statement Date and an Account Number at the top of each page,
  • a checking summary marked ***Checking*** with Previous Statement Balance as of, Deposits/Credits or Deposits and Other Credits, Checks/Other Debits or Checks and Other Debits (each with its count), Current Statement Balance as of and Number of Days in This Statement Period, with or without a row of dots before each amount,
  • a list of paid checks under ***Checking Transactions*** with the columns Serial, Date and Amount, one or two checks per line,
  • an activity table under ***Checking Account Transactions*** with the columns Date, Description, Debits and Credits, and
  • a ***Balance by Date*** list of dates and end-of-day balances.

A table or section we do not know is refused before you are asked to pay. The result then says "This TD Bank statement layout is new to us". If you see that on your monthly TD Bank US checking statement, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. It helps us decide what to build next. Please do not send the statement.

Two Balance by Date forms we do not read yet. We have not seen either one on a statement from TD itself, so we do not guess at them:

  • A Balance by Date list headed ***Checking Balance by Date*** (sometimes printed with a ***Savings Balance by Date*** list on statements that also have savings). The file is refused with "This TD Bank statement layout is new to us".
  • A Balance by Date list that runs onto the next page without its heading printed again. We do not read the lines on the new page, so the check "Every transaction line read" fails and the preview shows no rows.

Neither costs you anything. If your statement prints either one, please use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. Please do not send the statement.

How that layout turns into rows

  • Two lists, one file. Each paid check becomes a row with the description Check #1043 and a negative amount. Each line of the activity table becomes a row too. Rows come out in the order they are printed. In the layout above the check list is printed before the activity table, so the checks come first and the file is not sorted by date.
  • The column gives the sign. TD prints amounts with no minus sign. An amount under Debits comes out negative, an amount under Credits positive. If an amount has a sign of its own, sits between the two columns, or a row has one in each, we do not guess. The check "Every transaction line read" fails and the preview shows no rows.
  • Long descriptions. When a description runs onto a second line, the two lines are joined with a space. If the amount is printed on the second line, it still belongs to the row above.
  • Page 2 and after. The statement date, name and account number printed again at the top of each page are never rows.
  • Dates have no year. TD prints dates like 12/30. PaperRows takes the year from the statement period, which runs from the Previous Statement Balance date to the Current Statement Balance date. If those two balance dates are printed without a year too, their year comes from the Statement Date at the top. With neither a year nor a Statement Date, the file is refused. A December to January statement gets the earlier year for the December rows and the later year for the January rows. If a row's date does not fit inside the period, the check "Dates inside the statement period" fails and the preview shows no rows.
  • Balance by Date is used only to check the rows. Each end-of-day balance has to follow from the opening balance and the rows up to that day, or the check "Daily balances match" fails. These balances are never rows.
  • No running balance. TD does not print a balance on each transaction, so the balance column in the plain CSV is empty.
  • The last page (How to Balance Your Account or the Reconciliation Worksheet, Checks Outstanding and the error notice) is ignored, numbers included.
  • The summary is checked. The number of rows has to match the counts printed next to Deposits/Credits and Checks/Other Debits, and the rows have to add up to both totals and take the previous balance to the current balance. The number of days and the statement date have to agree with the two balance dates.

3. What you get

After you unlock a statement there are two buttons: Download plain CSV and Download QuickBooks CSV. The files are named after the bank and the statement period, for example paperrows-td-2026-12-15-to-2027-01-14.csv and paperrows-td-2026-12-15-to-2027-01-14-quickbooks.csv.

Plain CSV:

page,line,date,description,amount,balance
1,15,2026-12-21,Check #1818,-447.83,
1,21,2026-12-17,POS Debit Hardware Store,-93.54,
1,24,2026-12-31,Payroll Deposit Employer Inc,2400.00,

QuickBooks Online CSV:

Date,Description,Amount
12/21/2026,Check #1818,-447.83
12/17/2026,POS Debit Hardware Store,-93.54
12/31/2026,Payroll Deposit Employer Inc,2400.00

(Made-up example rows, not real data.) A full made-up sample statement and the exact CSV PaperRows makes from it are on TD Bank statement to CSV or Excel. If a description starts with =, +, - or @, we put an apostrophe in front of it so a spreadsheet does not treat it as a formula.

4. Import into QuickBooks Online

The full steps are on the QuickBooks Online import guide. We have not yet tried that import in QuickBooks ourselves, and the guide says so at the top. For TD Bank US:

  • Already connected TD Bank to QuickBooks? If QuickBooks already pulls in this account through a bank feed, uploading the same dates again creates duplicates. Upload only months the feed does not cover, or exclude the duplicates when you review them.
  • Why one amount column and not two? QuickBooks Online accepts either. One signed column means a deposit cannot land as a withdrawal because of a mapping slip. Your statement prints Debits and Credits in separate columns; the file still has one Amount column, with money out negative.
  • Checks keep their number. A paid check comes through as Check #1043, so you can match it to the check you wrote.
  • Not in date order. Checks come first, then the other activity, as printed. That changes the order of the rows in the file, not the dates or amounts that get imported.
  • Checking and savings on one statement? If the savings account sits in its own section, only the checking rows go into the file and the savings rows are left out, so import it into your checking account in QuickBooks and nowhere else. A savings statement on its own is refused, and so is a statement with two or more checking accounts, so there is nothing to import for either. So far this has only been tested on made-up statements, not on a real combined TD Bank statement. If yours is combined, compare the rows in the file with the checking part of the PDF before you import.
  • Intuit's instructions currently limit one upload to 1,000 transactions. If a statement has more rows than that, split the file in a spreadsheet and keep the header row on both halves.

5. When a TD file is refused

A refused file shows no rows and no buy button. Previews are free, so you have not been charged for this one. The heading tells you which case it is:

What the heading says What is going on What to do
We could not open this PDF The file is empty, damaged or not really a PDF. Download the statement again from tdbank.com.
This PDF has a password The file asks for a password before it opens. We never ask for passwords. Save a copy without the password, or download a fresh one.
This PDF has pages without readable text At least one page is a picture with no text in it. Download the original statement. Do not scan or print to PDF.
We do not read this bank yet We could not find TD Bank wording in the statement header or the page footers. The header is the top of the first page, down to the first table or dated row. The footers are the last few lines of each page. Transaction rows never count. A file that only says TD, like a TD Ameritrade or TD Synnex statement, lands here. Check that you picked the right file. If it is your monthly TD Bank US checking statement, download it again from tdbank.com and make sure the top of the first page and the bottom of each page are not cropped.
We could not confirm this is a TD Bank US statement The detail line starts "This looks like a TD statement, but" and gives the reason. It is one of three: the file shows signs of TD Canada (TD Canada Trust, EasyWeb, the word chequing and the others listed above), it does not name TD Bank, N.A. or tdbank.com outside the transaction rows, or it has no US address. Nothing to do if it is a TD Canada Trust statement; we do not read those. If it is a TD Bank US checking statement, download the full monthly statement from tdbank.com again and make sure the first page is not cropped. If it is still refused, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw.
This does not look like a checking statement It looks like a savings, credit card or loan statement. A TD Bank US savings statement on its own lands here, and so does a statement with no checking section that prints a savings summary on the first page, in capitals or not. Nothing to do for now. Tell us if you want it.
This TD Bank statement layout is new to us It is a TD Bank US file, but not the layout above. Often a saved transactions screen, a table or section we do not know (such as a ***Checking Balance by Date*** heading), one statement with two or more checking accounts on it, or a savings section printed under the checking account's own number. Download the monthly checking statement itself. If it is already the monthly statement, it is a layout we have not built yet: use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw.
We do not recognize this statement layout The statement header or page footers name TD Bank and another bank too, so we cannot tell which layout to read. Check that you picked the right file. If it is your monthly TD Bank US checking statement, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw.

6. When a check fails

Sometimes we can read the file, but one of our checks against the statement itself does not pass. The preview then says Some checks did not pass, lists the checks that failed, and shows no rows and nothing to buy. Previews are free, so you have not been charged for this one. What each check means:

Failed check What it means
Every page read A page number is missing or out of order. Download the full statement again. If a fresh copy fails too, use Report a problem if the result shows it, or email hello@asgardagents.com with the statement month and the name of the check.
Every transaction line read A line looks like a transaction but we could not read it, or an amount does not sit clearly under Debits or Credits. The summary's day count or statement date not matching the balance dates shows up here too, and so does a Balance by Date list that runs onto the next page without its heading.
Transaction counts match The number of rows is not the number the summary prints next to Deposits/Credits or Checks/Other Debits.
Section totals match The rows do not add up to the Deposits/Credits or Checks/Other Debits total.
Opening + deposits - withdrawals = closing The rows do not take the previous balance to the current balance.
Daily balances match A Balance by Date figure does not follow from the rows up to that day.
Dates inside the statement period A row's date does not fit the period.

Apart from a missing page, that is on us. We never guess a row to make the numbers work. If the result shows Report a problem, use it; otherwise write to us at hello@asgardagents.com with the statement month and the name of the check that failed. Please do not send the PDF.

Questions? Write to us with the bank, the statement month and the message you saw. We never need the statement, so please do not attach it. More answers are on the FAQ.
