This layout is in beta. No real Wells Fargo statement has been through our full review yet, so we call it beta. We read it with the same checks as every other bank, and if a row is wrong, the refund rule covers it.
Which statements this page is about
This page is about the Wells Fargo Transaction history layout, used by many Everyday Checking statements. You can tell it by:
- an activity summary with Beginning balance on a date, Deposits/Additions, Withdrawals/Subtractions and Ending balance on a date, and
- a Transaction history table with the columns Date, Check Number, Description, Deposits/Additions, Withdrawals/Subtractions and Ending daily balance.
If your statement has one table of Date, Description, Amount and Balance with a balance on every row, it is the single-table layout, and your CSV has a balance on every row. The Wells Fargo help page covers both.
Not covered here: a statement that shows a savings account or a second account number on any page is refused with "This Wells Fargo statement layout is new to us". Business checking statements in this layout have not been tested. Credit cards are not read yet. Text PDFs only: scans and password-protected files are refused.
Why only some rows have a balance
The Ending daily balance column is printed once per date, on the last transaction of that date. When a day has three transactions, the first two have nothing in that column. PaperRows only writes down balances the statement prints, so those two rows have an empty balance in the CSV, and the last one has the day's balance.
In the sample, November 8 has three card purchases. The first two have no balance and the third has 9171.97, the balance at the end of that day.
Every printed balance is still checked. PaperRows takes the beginning balance, adds every row up to the end of that day, and compares the result with the printed figure. If one does not match, if the rows are not in date order, or if the last row of a day has no balance, the check "Daily balances match" fails and the preview shows no rows.
Filling in a balance on every row
If you want a running balance on every row, you can add it in a spreadsheet. Start from the Beginning balance on the statement and add each row's amount in order. For the sample:
- $6,807.34 beginning balance + $2,418.59 on November 6 = $9,225.93, the balance printed on that row.
- $9,225.93 - $4.46 - $24.75 - $24.75 = $9,171.97, the balance printed on the last November 8 row.
A figure you work out this way is not one Wells Fargo printed, but on the last row of each day it should equal the printed one.
Where the plus and minus signs come from
This layout has two amount columns instead of a signed amount. The column decides the sign: an amount under Deposits/Additions is money in and positive, an amount under Withdrawals/Subtractions is money out and negative. A row with an amount in both columns, or a number between the columns, is never guessed: the check "Every transaction line read" fails and the preview shows no rows.
The sample statement
Every name, number and transaction in the sample is invented. Our test generator made it. It is not a real Wells Fargo statement. It is a plain four-page document laid out the way PaperRows expects the Transaction history layout to be, and every page says SYNTHETIC TEST DATA, invented for software testing at the top.
The statement covers November 6 to December 5, 2026: beginning balance $6,807.34, deposits $4,496.01, withdrawals $422.87, ending balance $10,880.48. Page 1 is a cover page, page 2 has the 12 transactions, page 3 is a notice and page 4 is a balancing worksheet.

- November 8 has a balance only on its last row, for the reason above. Every other date in the sample has one transaction, so each of those rows has a balance.
- The two identical purchases on November 8 are both kept. The statement prints them twice, so the CSV has them twice. PaperRows never removes a row because it looks like another one.
- Dates have no year in the PDF. PaperRows takes the year from the statement date at the top of each page. A date inside a description, such as
Purchase authorized on 11/07, stays part of the description. - Two descriptions start with an apostrophe. The sample includes two rows whose descriptions start with
=and+. We put an apostrophe in front of a description like that so a spreadsheet does not treat it as a formula. - Not rows: the cover page, the Ending balance and Totals lines, the fee summaries, the notice on page 3 (even though it has a date and an amount) and the worksheet.
When you buy a statement you also get a QuickBooks Online CSV with Date, Description and Amount. The sample here is the plain CSV only.
How we checked the sample
The generator wrote down the expected rows while it drew the PDF, from the same made-up records and without running PaperRows. The converter then reads the PDF on its own. Its rows match those expected rows, apart from the apostrophes above, and every check that applies to the sample passes: the totals, the summary, the printed balances and the dates. Our test suite holds the CSV above to the converter's output for the sample, byte for byte.
What that does not tell you: that every Wells Fargo statement will read this cleanly. Matching totals are a strong sign, not proof, so look over the preview before you pay.
Convert your own statement
Open the converter and drop in your Wells Fargo statement PDF. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. The preview is free and shows every row with its page and line, and the checks against the statement. If PaperRows cannot read the file, it tells you why before you pay anything. Downloading the two CSV files for a statement costs $5. No subscription.
